A thought for Sunday: Obama's second term priorities
- by New Deal democrat
Reports are that the 3 big priorities for Obama's second term are guns, immigration, and climate change.
Did you see jobs or unemployment on that list? No? Neither did I.
We are so screwed.

unless the make up of the House is changed there is little he can do
So, I would expect him to focus on somethings that he think he can get something done.
Climate change is a stretch but the GOP will not, never vote for stimulus spending on the level we'd actually need. We may get a small infrastructure amount but beyond that I don't see the GOP voting for anything substantial to help with jobs.
The best, and perhaps only, thing Obama can do on jobs/unemployment is avoid as much austerity as he can in the negotiations over the sequester and the budget resolution.
If he can survive this battle without doing any harm to the economy, then things should really start to hit escape velocity. Deficits will begin to shrink dramatically if we're to believe Calculated Risk and others who have weighed in on that recently, and housing is starting to take off.
"Guns" may have issues getting a senate majority, indeed getting onto the floor, and once Obama loses Democratic Senators on major issues, or puts them into embarrassing situations, their loyalty on other issues falls. "Immigration" on both sides is a political football to win votes from their base.
Budget? Foreign Policy? Defense policy other than bombing foreigners who can't shoot back effectively?
Readers are urged to consider the GAO report "A Crisis of Stewardship" -- which may be too optimistic, or may have weak assumptions.
climate change after climate gate, good luck- The Fed has his back on the employment and housing front. What recovery there is on housing will still have some the anti red lining laws that brought the first crisis, not across the board, but Obama needs the CRA as the Fed uses it to back up there housing mandates. Employment- heh not with high minimum wages and high gas, new normal gas prices? Immigration with Rubio, I hope so. So much for less than a trillion dollar deficits for unpaid for unemployment benefits and other entitlements.
My tax practice is centered around captive insurance. I'm the author of the book U.S. Captive Insurance Law (which is also available on Kindle), the leading book in the field. You can learn more about captive insurance at my website.

The Bonddad Economic History Project
At the beginning of 2012, I decided to start looking at the actual, statistical history of the US economy starting in 1950. The reason is simple: to find out what really happened. So, when you see title of a post that begins with a year such as 1957, followed by "employment" or "Fed policy: you know what it's for. You can also access the information by typing in BE for Bonddad econ and a year to find information on a particular year.
Here is a link to pages that contain links to all the posts on the years listed.
